In this exhibition, Choi Ju Yeon presents installation and video works. She casts real people, often acquaintances, in wax and projects videos of those same individuals onto the sculptures. Each person is thus recreated in two forms: a wax sculpture and a moving image. The artist then sets the wax on fire and records the process until it burns out.
While Choi's earlier works focused on faces, the wax sculptures in Neither Stay nor Leave extend to the entire human body, expanding both the scale and concept of her work. Rather than defining existence and disappearance simply as being and non-being, she leaves the boundaries of existence open. Death does not mark an end; existence continues beyond it.
Within this ongoing process, the visible image of a person and the invisible self concealed behind the mask coexist. Even after death, existence remains among us, still wearing a persona and disguising its own disappearance.
최주연은 이번 전시에서 설치와 영상작품을 선보이려한다. 최주연의 작품은 왁스로 실제 인물(지인)을 캐스팅한다. 그리고 캐스팅된 왁스 오브제에 캐스팅한 인물의 영상을 빔프로젝터로 영사한다. 곧 실재 존재하는 인물은 왁스 오브제로, 그리고 영상으로 재제작 되어 재탄생하게 된다. 그러고서는 왁스에 불을 붙여 초의 생명을 다 할 때 까지 영상으로 그 과정을 기록한다.
최주연의 예전 작업에서는 캐스팅한 대상이 얼굴에만 한정되어 있었던 반면 이번 전시 <머물지도 떠나지도 않는>에서 주를 이루게 될 왁스 오브제는 전신상으로 앞선 작품들에 비해 그 영역과 개념이 확장되었다. 존재와 그 존재의 사라짐을 결코 있음과 없음의 관계로 단정 짓지 않고, 존재의 영역을 열어두었다. 존재의 죽음이 끝을 나타냄이 아니라 여전히 계속 진행된다는 것이다. 그리고 그 끝없는 진행 속에 무한한 가면으로의 상(보이는 대상)과 가면 속에 감춰진(보이지 않는 대상) 상은 공존한다. 존재의 죽음 이후에도 여전히 존재는 페르소나를 장착하고 죽음을 위장한 채 우리 곁을 머문다.
